After showering and changing we all met and decided to walk around town to explore and get our bearings. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world and the closest one to the continent of Antarctica. Its population is about 60,000. It is often known as "fin del mundo" or the "end of the world". It is situated at 54 degrees, 49'S, and 68 degrees 17' West. Its port in the Beagle channel provides the gateway for most expeditions heading to Antarctica.
We walked up and down the waterfront, finding the "wreck" of St. Christopher ( a ship that ran aground and then the owner couldn't afford to fix it and get it seaworthy again), the Isla Malvinas war memorial ( the Argentinian name for the Falkland Islands), and finally found a place open where we could have a bite to eat and some local brews! We enjoyed the Ramos Generales pub though I can't say the sandwich I had was very tasty. The beer however was delicious!

delicious Beagle beer: stout, negra, all good! |
and interesting bathroom signs! |
After food and drink we went into a few shops. I bought a penguin fleece headband and some post cards. The sun was still up and bright at 8:30 pm. We tasted some local ice cream too and then found a store where we could buy more beer and we invited the gang back to our apartment for a nightcap.
first penguin sighting? |
Good ice cream but we had no idea what flavors we were tasting! |

Happy to be together in Argentina! Went to bed about 10 pm hoping for a good sleep. Big day ahead tomorrow!
